Rock ‘N’ Roll half marathon!!!! Race Recap!

FullSizeRender 21

Rock ‘n’ Roll Nashville Marathon & Half Marathon was this weekend and it did not disappoint!!!!   This race has become a family tradition since 2009 when Dad, Amy and I ran the race together.   Here is a throwback pic when we surprised Dad with matching shirts for the 2009 race.

We have continued running this race each year (minus last year for me) and added Chaz (and baby Rhett) to the group!  Here is a before pic…

Trash bags made the perfect runner raincoat! We all stayed dry and once the rain stopped just threw the bags away.  The rain did provide somewhat cooler temps and shade which was a nice change from previous years.

The course was tough but had tons of crowd support and live bands!  Chaz’s #1 goal was 1:55, #2 goal 2:00, #3 goal finish.  This #1 goal was over five minutes faster than his time last year.   He used one of my very basic 12 week plans (no tempo runs or speed work) running 4 days per week.  He stuck to the plan and had a really strong race!!!!

FullSizeRender 13

He had to stop for a potty break around mile 2 which took about 20 seconds…we were pretty much on track then around mile 7 as I’m talking his ear off he looks over at me and says “I can’t talk to you anymore, my calves hurt”.   I continue talking and trying to distract him while keeping him on pace & making sure he was okay.   He said he felt fine but his calves were cramping up…this had not happened to him during training, go figure!  Salt tabs and lots of fluids!    At mile 11 he wanted to walk.  I explained to him that we could walk but that at the end he is not allowed to tell me he could have run faster nor be disappointed if he didn’t reach his goal.  He walked briefly then got back on track!  So proud of him at the end…HILLS!!!!  His time was 1:56:12 and he was thrilled.FullSizeRender 15

Splits!  If only chip time was same as my watch time 1:55:22 (I stopped it when we stopped).  IMG_7907

Expo pic with the hubby!  Love having expo at Music City Convention Center; seemed much easier with parking or we just got lucky!

We didn’t partake in post marathon concert instead we hosted my friend’s 40th birthday fiesta!  No rest for the weary around here!   Fun day and night!!!!   Best. Sleep. Ever.

Weekly Menu & Weekend Recap!

FullSizeRender 32

Love this motivation to help keep me on track and motivated this week!  Keeping it real…I have slipped up a little on the Whole 30 round 2 (wine and some chocolate were consumed), not going to beat myself up over it. I will try better this week!  Not an excuse BUT…on higher milage run days I find I need more “snacks” than average and should eat larger meals to avoid the slip-ups…lesson learned.

Friday Favorites!!!  If you’re new to Catch A Leaf, welcome!  Friday Favorites are where I share random things I love each week…products, TV shows, videos, basically stuff I enjoy and want to share!

#1 This sign that I proudly display on our front porch…IMG_7555

Let me explain this one.  When I bought this (off Etsy) we were having lots of solicitors…they were selling everything from lawn service, cable/phone service, magazines etc, it was annoying!   Our doberman would run to the front door and try to eat every single one of them.  I basically bought this sign for their protection…..  Yesterday I found this card sitting next to it, feel bad moment.

#2  This CND weekly top coat, base “stickery” coat & polish are amazing!!!  Keeps your polish on so much longer! You can find on Amazon, link here!

#3  Mini’s artwork!  Love our wall of framed artwork and she is SO proud of her creations!

#4 COACHING!!!!  I have several athletes that I’m coaching currently and loving watching them flourish!!!  I have athletes with a wide range of goals!  5k, 13.1 and 26.2…with a few that are very close to qualifying for Boston!  Click here for more information!  image#5 Paleo Plantain Nachos!  In case you missed the post, click here for recipe!

Cheers to the weekend!

Whole 30 weekly menu and weekend recap!

Weekly Menu

  • Shredded Pork Tenderloin (on sale at Publix). Wrap the pork in bacon (I use several pieces, adds more flavor), add 1/2 cup chick broth, 1/4 cup balsamic vinegar & season with salt & pepper. Cook in crock pot on low 6-7 hours, shred and cook 1-2 more hours. Serve on lettuce and top with guac.
  • Whole 30 Shepard’s Pie.  I use recipe out of Whole 30 book but as long as you check your ingredients its pretty simple to keep Whole30 (no peas or corn / use carrots, celery, mushrooms, onion instead; use mashed sweet potatoes vs white potatoes and add in extra meat).
  • Strawberry Spinach Salad with Chicken (spinach, 1 whole avocado sliced, strawberries, grilled chicken, crumbled bacon and Tesserae’s lemon dressing)
  • Buffalo Chicken Tenders with Paleo Ranch for dipping! Buffalo Sauce – melted Ghee, Franks Red Hot Sauce, Garlic Salt & Pepper – spread over chicken and bake.  Option to add more sauce when chicken is almost done cooking.
  • Baked Salmon, kale chips, and prochuito wrapped asparagus.
  • Plantain Nachos!!! (will post recipe this week).

Weekend Recap

This weekend went by way too fast!!!!  Lots of fun memories were made with the Schuster family who came in for a visit during their Spring Break.

Friday Favorites

FullSizeRender 47

Were you able to pull any good April Fools jokes today?!  My husband got me pretty good telling me had to return to Memphis for work this afternoon and would be gone until Saturday…I fell for it immediately stressing over our weekend plans with friends and of course missing my run.  Well played Chaz.

Onto this week’s Friday Favorites!!!  Today is day five of my Whole30 so a few more food focused favorites than normal this week…. we know where my head is at!

#1  Always a good day when your new Runners World arrives!!!    I hope to be reading it this weekend!IMG_7445

#2  Sprouts Plantain Chips.  These have helped with my chip cravings, dip in some guac and you forget your eating plantains!!!   Warning…they go fast buy a few bags!  IMG_7446

#3  Oil Mister!!!  $9.99 at Bed Bath and Beyond (plus 20% off…never go there without a coupon).  I put avocado oil in mine and use it to spay over veggies before roasting or use in pan to prevent sticking.  FullSizeRender 45

#4 Prosciutto wrapped green bean bundles!!!  Honestly anything wrapped in prosciutto is excellent but these were the perfect side the other night.  (3-4 green beans per bundle, wrap in prosciutto, spray with avocado oil, cook at 400 for 15 minutes then flip and cook 5 more / season to taste with pepper).  This is also great with asparagus, same concept.  IMG_7442

#5 My sweet friend Emily’s new song!!!!  She co-wrote this song and does the vocals!!!  She seriously has the voice of an angel!  Click HERE to listen!

FullSizeRender 46

#6 When friends come to visit!!!!  LOVE this family…our girls don’t miss a beat and even our poodles are half sisters.  Looking forward to spending the weekend with them!

#7 Fresh Flowers!!!  Love when the table has them, I don’t do it often as they can be expensive but when friends come in to visit its a nice excuse!  Found these at Costco for $14.99!

I hope everyone has a great weekend, enjoy your families and hopefully the sunshine!

Paleo Chicken Broccoli Alfredo!

My obsession with spaghetti squash continues.  Not only is this tasty dish Whole30…it’s simple, easy to prep ahead of time and makes great leftovers!

  • 1 large spaghetti squash – cooked / shredded
  • 3-4 chicken breast – cooked / shredded
  • 1 head of broccoli – chopped
  • 1/2 yellow onion diced (3/4 cup)
  • 2 cloves minced garlic
  • 1/2 sliced mushrooms
  • 1/2 chicken broth
  • 1 16oz can coconut milk
  • 1 1/2 cups cashews
  • 2T ghee or avocado oil
  • Salt & Pepper to taste

Weekend Recap…back to routine Whole30 style!

Weekend Recap….back to routine and reality!

FullSizeRender 40

#1 benefit to coming home from the beach on Friday…you can still meet your running group  for Saturday morning long run!  Nothing screams welcome home like 11 miles at 6:30 AM.

FullSizeRender 38

Vacation catch up of laundry, cleaning, and unpacking in full effect but we had to take a break and head to the lake…for more cleaning and some time on freshwater.   I’m convinced boats NEVER stay clean for longer than a few hours and there is always something that needs WORK.   Thankfully Chaz enjoys cleaning & working or we would be in trouble!

FullSizeRender 39

Happy Easter!!!!   Easter Bunny stopped in for a visit…the request of American Girl diabetic kit (no clue) didn’t make the basket.  Apparently its a popular request and is backordered until May, even EB couldn’t get his paws on one.   American Girl gift cards instead which were a huge hit!    I question if she still believes…either way she plays along so well and is such a good gift opener with so much excitement and squeals.

Gigi & Papa came in town for Easter ham lunch and to return our poodles.   They are happy to be home! IMG_7384

Its more expensive to board your dogs here for a week than it is for your entire vacation itself (no exaggeration).  I called and was quoted almost $750 for two poodles for the week…ummmm NO! They said the basic rooms were full and our dogs would get “belly rubs, nightly walks, and treats”…to each his own. Thankfully my parents kept the poodles and now we are keeping Geoff  ‘The Therapy Dog’  for a week this summer when they travel….

Back on track this week, WHOLE30 style!!!!  This vacation & Easter I had my fair share of french fries, wine, and non Paleo foods (can we say Chocolate bunny)…my stomach & sleep feel it!  I’m sure I’ve gained a few pounds and I’m definitely feeling the loss of those “non-scale victories” I experienced on the Whole 30.   Anyone want to start with me?!

Orange Beach Spring Break Favorites!

A last minute decision to head South for Spring Break proved to be a great one!!!!  So many fun memories this week in Orange Beach, AL with the Aufdenkamp family!   The was our first trip to Orange Beach and it did not disappoint!!!  Family friendly vacation with activities to keep both kids and adults entertained!

Saturday 3pm:  Are we there yet?!    Straight down 65 South, no traffic and arrived by 10pm!   Tip:  Do not drink a ton of water between Montgomery and Evergreen, AL…there are no places to stop, none.

We stayed at White Caps 205, it was a nice 3 bedroom unit, directly on the beach with a great view!   Overall prices are much lower compared to 30A or Destin but experience very similar….the same Gulf.
